Title & Abstract

Unlocking Project Success: Building Timely and Accurate Reporting for a Major Capital Project

In this presentation, we will explore integrated reporting for a major capital project in Alaska undertaken by Santos, from its startup phase to its current state. We will discuss the challenges the team faced with disparate systems, contractors, and data sources, and how they overcame these challenges by laying the groundwork for effective project controls and technology integration.

We will delve into the importance of defining scope through a standard work breakdown structure and understanding stakeholder requirements to support the project lifecycle. Additionally, we will outline the significance of establishing a documented reporting strategy and process, including enforcing “garbage in, garbage out” policies and defining a reporting calendar that aligns with stakeholder requirements.

Furthermore, we will highlight the criticality of laying the groundwork before implementing technology, emphasizing the importance of conducting gap-fit analyses to assess standard tools and avoiding system reporting disputes. We will also discuss the importance of establishing an enterprise data model and period-based reporting, as well as setting up formal and ad-hoc reporting solutions.

As a bonus, we will preview some of the reporting visuals in Power BI we produce and provide a leave-behind worksheet for attendees to assess their own projects and implement the learnings from this presentation.

Overall, this presentation will provide insights into a comprehensive approach to structuring project information for a major capital project in Alaska undertaken by Santos, leveraging effective project controls and technology to support timely and informed leadership decision-making.
