Title & Abstract

Advanced Work Packaging – The wireframe for project controls

A common description of Project Controls is that it is like trying to drive a car by looking in the rear view mirror. While this is a fairly accurate narrative of most projects, the relationship between cause and effect can be captured in real time, if you have the right foundation. Advanced Work Packaging is the wire frame that provides the correct structure, and Insight-AWP are the folks that help Projects make it happen.

AWP is a series of best practice work processes that dissect projects into manageable work packages and then synchronizes them across Engineering, Procurement and Construction to form a single language of work packages for the whole project. The same work packages become elements of the schedule, cost reporting, fabrication, shipping and even material management. This infrastructure supports the creation of Installation Work Packages that are one week fragments of constraint free work for each crew.

The magic happens when we use this structure to capture, store and mine digital data that shows the scope, planned value, duration and progress of each work package, live in real time, in a dashboard, on your phone, as a single version of project truth.

Armed with the current state of whatever it is they want to know, your project managers can make informed decisions based on data and then see the results of their decisions in real time. Effectively moving their view from the rear-view mirror to a front facing radar

Come and visit us at the Project Controls Conference in Galveston April 22-24 and we will show you how you too can apply AWP. Our presentation at the conference will walk the audience through the application of AWP and teach them Why and How they should do it.
