Title & Abstract

Application of Strategic Decision Quality on Tactical Decisions – A Risk Management Approach

As an avid sailor I can tell you, Racing sailboats is all about strategic planning, and agile change management, or as I like to call it, Tactical Decision Management.

We’ve made our plans in advance. Once on the water we verify our knowns, unknowns, and make our last global strategic decisions. Then we enter our starting sequence and attempt to meet our starting objectives… but we are not alone.

Change comes at you from the environment, from tactics that work, those that do not work as intended, from outside disruptions, from failure in your execution, and from failure in your deployed assets. The changes may allow for slow methodical adjustments, or they may demand immediate attention with high quality decisions.

Good project decision making, like sailboat racing is about endurance, making less mistakes in the long run, and being able to pivot based on good choices, not desired outcomes.

Participants will take a way a high level snapshot of decision quality, and how to take those guiding principles to assess regular decision quality in order to drive better dialog and data on decision options to weight them more by the numbers, and less by assumptions.
