From Scheduler to Strategic Advisor: Thriving in the Age of AI

AI is rapidly transforming project controls, and as its adoption increases, many of the tasks that once defined the planner and scheduler role are being automated. This shift poses a critical question: If AI can do your job, have you already been doing too little?

The uncomfortable truth is that AI doesn’t replace planners—it exposes which ones were never truly advising to begin with. As routine tasks become automated, real professional value shifts toward technical accountability, interpretation, forecasting, and risk translation.

In this session, you’ll hear directly from Daniel Gilmour, Director of Planning and Scheduling at Brasfield & Gorrie, as he explores the current state of AI in planning and scheduling and provides practical applications for your workflows. You’ll discover where AI can optimize your processes and where it falls short, examine who’s providing genuine insight versus simply producing outputs, and learn how to collaborate with AI as a partner while avoiding over-reliance. Daniel will address implications for entry-level roles and provide concrete strategies for AI-proofing your career, helping you evolve into a trusted strategic advisor in an AI-enabled future.

Here’s what you’ll gain by attending this session:

    • Understanding of how AI is currently affecting the Planning & Scheduling industry and where it’s headed.
    • Practical approaches for partnering with AI in your workflows rather than competing against it.
    • Career strategies specifically designed for entry-level planning and scheduling professionals.
    • Techniques for demonstrating technical accountability through risk translation and communicating planning uncertainty.
    • Methods for harnessing communication and storytelling to overcome AI anxiety and showcase your unique value.
    • Guidance on avoiding over-reliance on AI—learning where human judgment must remain central.
