Steering Production Towards Targets: Advanced Metrics for the Last Planner System®

The Last Planner System® (LPS) for Production Control fundamentally differs from traditional project management in one critical way: it steers production toward targets rather than simply measuring outcomes against predetermined baselines. If you’ve worked with LPS and found that high Percent Planned Complete (PPC) scores don’t always translate to meeting production goals, you’re not alone—and there’s a better way to gain visibility into what’s really happening.

This session explores how LPS supports reliable production execution through its five core elements and a set of advanced metrics designed to provide deeper insight into system performance. While PPC remains the original reliability metric introduced by LPS, many teams achieve high PPC scores yet still fall short of their production targets. The missing piece? Integrating additional metrics that reveal the complete picture.

By incorporating Commitment Level (CL), Percent Required Complete (PRC), and Milestone Variance (MV)—metrics originally introduced at IGLC 2016 and incorporated into the LPS 2020 benchmark by P2SL—project teams gain clearer visibility into production readiness, flow reliability, and the real sources of variance. Together, these metrics complement PPC to create a more comprehensive, target-driven production control framework.

Whether you’re a project controls professional looking to enhance production management on complex, fast-moving projects or seeking ways to bridge traditional controls with LPS practices, this session will show you how combining these approaches leads to more predictable outcomes and stronger project performance..

Here’s what you’ll gain by attending this session:

  • Learn how to differentiate between baseline‑driven project controls and target‑driven production control, and understand how LPS complements traditional controls practices.
  • Discover how advanced LPS metrics (CL, PRC, and MV) provide deeper insight into production readiness, flow reliability, and root causes of variance beyond PPC.
  • Explore strategies for improving the alignment between project controls and LPS practices to improve production management on complex, rapidly evolving projects.
